18.

It is estimated that the land to

be resumed under the scheme proposed can be acquired for

$461,000 (the Director of Public Works estimates the value

at $368,668) from which may be deducted the $15,000 and

the value of the Crown Land referred to in the 15th. para-

-graph. Having regard to the advantages which this site

presents, and to the great development which must take

place when the Railway is linked up with the main trunk

system of China, I am of opinion that it will be wise to

incur the expenditure in order to provide a suitable

Terminal Station with room for three platforms, with

adequate approaches both by land and sea for passengers,

and a deep-sea wharf with ample space for berthage and for

storage buildings. I have therefore the honour to ask

Your Lordship's authority to proceed with the resumption of

the land required for the scheme.

19.

I shall address Your Lordship in

a separate Despatch on the subject of the site for the

Workshops on which subject the Chief Resident Engineer has

already written to the Consulting Engineers.

I have the honour to be, My Lord,

Your Lordship's most obedient,

humble servant,

Hugarch

Governor,&c..
